First carriers awarded new quality standard

Two members of the Freight Traders carrier community have become the first carriers to receive the new CAPA (Carrier Analysis Provider Audit) Certification. DFDS Transport and European Freight Services received their accreditation certificates from Carrier Analysis Limited to demonstrate they have the skills and systems in place to ensure goods will be moved safely and efficiently.

CAPA was launched by Carrier Analysis Limited in October 2005 and evaluates the systems and performance of transport providers. To obtain the standard, carriers are subject to a 130 point audit that includes operational controls, security, employment and training policies, drivers hours management, vehicle maintenance, health and safety and quality management systems.

Congratulating the staff of the two companies Garry Mansell, Managing Director of Freight Traders said, “It pleases me greatly that two companies from our community were the first to rise to the challenge of gaining CAPA Certification. When we started working with Carrier Analysis and our shipper and carrier community to establish the CAPA programme, I was certain that carriers would respond. CAPA Certification recognises their professionalism and is something their customers, the shippers, were asking for.”

As one of the first carriers to receive CAPA Certification, Chris Malyon, General Manager for UK Strategic Sales of DFDS Transport explained their reason for applying for the programme, “As a major European logistics provider we were delighted to participate in the CAPA programme. At DFDS Transport we set high standards for service and performance and it is very gratifying to have these standards recognised by a formal audit process. We believe that CAPA Certification sets an industry benchmark that will distinguish the exceptional carriers."

For European Freight Services, Richard Springford, Managing Director, said, "The award of CAPA Certification reinforces the high standards we set for service, already reflected in our ISO 9001 registration. As the CAPA programme is industry specific it gives our customers the added reassurance that issues such as driver hours and vehicle security are being addressed. I'm certain that CAPA Certification will become a key differentiator in the road transport industry, rewarding those who comply and squeezing those that fail to meet essential operating standards."

CAPA Certification will be shown against the carrier names on the Freight Traders web site, although accreditation is not limited to members of the Freight Traders community.

In conclusion Garry Mansell said, “We pride ourselves on our carrier community. Only carriers with immaculate references from shipper clients are allowed to join us. CAPA Certification adds to this and differentiates carriers in our community. It would be wrong to suggest that all carrier members of our community will eventually be certified, or indeed that we would ever insist on it. But already some of our shipper members are encouraging our carriers to put their names forward for the programme with a view to using this as a selection criteria for entry into their tenders.”
